Then, when walking towards the mosque, it is recommended to pray:

“O Allah, place light in my heart, in my sight, in my hearing, on my right, on my left, above me, beneath me, in front of me, and behind me; O Allah, grant me light.”

Manners Relating to the Mosque

  1. Cleaning the impurities in the mosque. Based on the hadith:

“Spitting in the mosque is a sin, and its expiation is to bury it.” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
  2. Guarding against unpleasant odors from the mouths of those who pray. According to the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ (يَعْنِيْ الثَّوْمَ) فَلاَ يَقْرَبَنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا

“Whoever eats from this tree (meaning garlic), then let him not approach our mosque.” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 853, and Muslim, no. 561 (68)]
  3. Avoiding buying and selling in the mosque, as prohibited by the Prophet (peace be upon him).
  4. Not raising one’s voice (speaking loudly) in the mosque. Based on the statement of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him):لَوْ كُنْتُمَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَلَدِ َلأَوْجَعْتُكُمَا، تَرْفَعَانِ أَصْوَاتَكُماَ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

If you were from the people of this town (Madinah), I would have punished both of you for raising your voices in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 470]

  5. Praying two rakats upon entering the mosque (before sitting). According to the hadith:

“When one of you enters the mosque, let him pray two rakats before sitting.” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 444, and Muslim, no. 714]

  6. Not leaving the mosque after the call to prayer (adhan) is announced. Based on the hadith from Abu Sya’tha:كُنَّا قُعُوْداً مَعَ أَبِيْ هُرَيْرَةَ z فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَذَّنَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ يَمْشِيْ فَأَتْبَعَهُ أَبُوْ هُرَيْرَةَ بِبَصَرِهِ حَتَّى خَرَجَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ أَبُوْ هُرَيْرَةَ أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ عَصَى أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

“We were sitting with Abu Huraira in the mosque when the muezzin called the prayer. A man stood up and left the mosque. Abu Huraira observed him with his gaze until he exited the mosque. Abu Huraira then said, ‘As for this person, he has indeed disobeyed Abul-Qasim (the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him).'” [Narrated by Muslim, no. 655]

  7. Reciting a supplication while walking towards the mosque. Based on the hadith of Ibn Abbas:

“The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say when going to the mosque:

‘O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my tongue, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light behind me, light in front of me, light above me, and light below me. O Allah, grant me light.'” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 6316, and Muslim, no. 763 (191)]
